Wipeout is an American T.V. show and has been billed as ‘The world’s largest obstacle course’. It first burst onto our screens in 2008 on ABC hosted by John Henson and John Anderson while the ‘on-location’ presenter was Jill Wagner. The American version is filmed on a ranch about 40 miles north of Los Angeles.

Wipeout consists of four rounds where the contestants try and complete an obstacle course in the least amount of time. Only the top four make it to the final round which is called the Wipeout Zone. Here the winner gains the title of Wipeout Champion and $50,000. The obstacles change round but are always quirky and offbeat. There are a few regular challenges such as the ‘Big Balls’ which is the show’s trademark obstacle and features in all the versions in different countries, the ‘Sucker Punch’ and the ‘Sweeper’. The tone of the whole show is very lighthearted until the final round when the background music becomes more serious and the humor is toned down.

Wipeout also airs in Britain under the name Total Wipeout (presented by Richard Hammond of Top Gear) and Australia under the name Wipeout Australia but Endemol USA the producers of the show have sold it to over 30 countries and have created two obstacle courses in Argentina, a place where other countries could film their version and overcome their health and safety rules.

Undercover Boss started in 2009 on Channel 4 and currently has franchises in America and Australia with several other countries just about to jump on board. The format is practically the same in every country.

A clue to what the series is about is in the title – Undercover Boss. Each week the boss of a large corporation gets ‘down and dirty’ without those around knowing who he really is. He poses as a low level employee in his own company for a week, working with other employees and getting to know what they really think of him and the corporation. He also sees how well they work and who, if any, put in that little bit extra. At the end of the week, good employees are rewarded while slackers can be sent for retraining. The boss comes away knowing a lot more about the day to day workings of his own corporation.

The Australian version of Undercover Boss aired in October 2010 and showed the boss of Domino’s Pizza, Don Meij, going ‘undercover’. America first aired the show in February 2010 right after the Super Bowl XLIV and featured Larry o’Donnell, the boss of Waste Management, Inc.. This was watched by 36.8 million viewers and gained a 32% share. The first episode of Undercover Boss achieved the largest audience of any new series after the Super Bowl since 1987.

Two and a half men is now in its eighth season and has just been signed up in an unusual two year contract for another two seasons. Starting in 2003, the show follows the lives of Charlie, (Charlie Sheen) a womanizing, hedonistic, jingle writer and his divorced brother, Alan (Jon Cryer) who moves in to Charlie’s house on the beach front together with his young son, Jake (Angus T. Jones).

Two and a Half Men has watched little Jake grow into a teenager over the past seven years who is more like his uncle Charlie than his father Alan. Charlie has had to tone down his free-wheeling ways (although not THAT much) and the arrival of his new ‘family’ put different constraints onto his life.

It was in doubt at the beginning of 2010 whether Two and a Half Men would actually carry on or not due to Charlie Sheen personal life. It was rumored at the end of season seven that he said he had had enough and would not return because he was not being paid enough. These rumors were soon scotched however when Sheen announced he would be staying with the show at the rate of $1.73 million an episode which made him the highest paid person on television. Two and a Half Men has garnered in an admirable list of celebrity guests over the years but there’s nothing like keeping it in the family. So Far the series has seen Sheen’s brother Emilio Estevez, his father, Martin Sheen, his wife, Denise Richards and their daughter Sam Sheen.

Two and a Half Men has received nominations for 30 Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe nominations. It has won the “Favorite TV Comedy” award at the 35th People’s Choice Awards.
